Essential Fatty Acids?
Why are they called essential fatty acids? The essential fatty acids were given their name when researchers found that they were essential to the normal growth in young children and animal (William E.M Lands, 1992).A small quantity of omega -3 in the diet (1% of total calories) enabled normal growth. Increasing the had little to n additional effect on growth. Likewise, researchers found that omega-6 Fatty acids (such as y – linolenic acid and archidonic acid) play a similar role in normal growth. The increasing awareness of health has led to the generation of a number of food product enriched in omega-3 fatty acids. Many enterprises started adding fish oil in to their final products so as to enrich them in omega-3 fatty acids. Some animal products, such as milk and eggs, can be naturally enriched to contain omega-3 fatty acids, by feeding the animals concerned with a diet that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
